Active and Passive Verb Forms

When the subject of a sentence performs an action, the form of verb is active.

  • He is painting the wall. (Active voice)
  • John is cleaning the floor. (Active voice)

When the subject of a sentence is acted upon, the form of verb is passive.

  • The wall is being painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • The floor is being cleaned by John. (Passive voice)

You must have noticed that the verb changes its form when the sentence is changed from the active voice to the passive voice. The passive form of the verb is made by adding necessary auxiliary verbs before the past participle form of the active verb. The active and passive forms of the verbs paint and clean are explained below with examples:-

When the active verb is in the simple present tense:

Active verb: paint/paints, clean/cleans

  • He paints the wall. (Active voice)
  • John cleans the floor. (Active voice)

Passive verb: is/am/are painted-  is/am/are cleaned

  • The wall is painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • The floor is cleaned by John.(Passive voice)

When the active verb is in the present continuous tense:

Active verb: is/am/are painting-is/am/are cleaning

  • He is painting the wall. (Active voice)
  • John is cleaning the floor. (Active voice)

Passive verb: is/am/are being painted– is/am/are being cleaned

  • The wall is being painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • The floor is being cleaned by John. (Passive voice)

When the active verb is in the present perfect tense:

Active verb: has/have painted– has/have cleaned

  • He has painted the wall. (Active voice)
  • John has cleaned the floor. (Active voice)

 

Passive verb: has/have been painted–has/have been cleaned

  • The wall has been painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • The floor has been cleaned by John. (Passive voice)

When the active verb is in the simple past tense:

Active verb: Painted- cleaned

  • He painted the wall. (Active voice)
  • John cleaned the floor. (Active voice)

Passive verb: was/were painted- was/were cleaned.

  • The wall was painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • The floor was cleaned by John. (Passive voice)

When the active verb is in the past continuous tense:

Active: was/were painting- was/were cleaning

  • He was painting the wall. (Active voice)
  • John was cleaning the floor. (Active voice)

Passive: was/were being painted-was/were being cleaned

  • The wall was being painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • The floor was being cleaned by John. (Passive voice)

When the active verb is in the past perfect tense:

Active verb: had painted- had cleaned–

  • He had painted the wall. (Active voice)
  • John had cleaned the floor. (Active voice)

Passive verb: had been painted- had been cleaned

  • The wall had been painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • The floor had been cleaned by John. (Passive voice)

 

When the active verb is in the simple future tense:

Active verb: will/shall paint- will/shall clean

  • He will paint the wall. (Active voice)
  • John will clean the floor. (Active voice)

Passive verb: will/shall be painted- will shall be cleaned

  • -The wall will be painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • -The floor will be cleaned by John. (Passive voice)

When the active verb is in the future perfect tense:

Active verb: will/shall have painted– will/shall have cleaned

  • He will have painted the wall. (Active voice)
  • John will have cleaned the floor. (Active voice)

Passive verb: will/shall have been painted-will/shall have been cleaned

  • The wall will have been painted by him. (Passive voice)
  • The floor will have been cleaned by john. (Passive voice)
