There is a big difference between adapt and adopt. Though adapt and adopt share similar spellings and pronunciations, they do not mean the same. Adapt is a verb that can be used both transitively and intransitively. When used as a transitive verb, Adapt means to make something suitable for a new purpose or use. Adapt also means to adjust or modify fittingly. Whereas adopt means to take and accept something as one’s own. Adopt is derived from the Latin word adoptare meaning to take by choice or choose by oneself.   Adopt also means to  take and rear (the child of other parents) as one’s own child,specifically by a formal legal act.

 

The following examples will make the usage clear.
Adapt Adopt
Many movies have been adapted from Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. Instead of having my own baby, I would choose to adopt an orphan.
It took me sometime to adapt to the weather condition in India. John dislikes going to the school after the strict rules adopted by the school.
I have no trouble adapting to any place, cuisine, or weather. It is not easy to move into a new place and adopt it as your own.
