As the title suggests there must be some confusion over the usage of myself, hence this article. According to a survey on the confusion over the usage of words, the word myself makes it to the top five of it. The word myself is used when you are both the subject and the object of a sentence. For example, “I hurt myself by loving her so much, “I am going to do this myself.” In both the statements the object and subject are same.

Myself vs I

The word myself can never be used without the subject I in a sentence.

Example: 

John and myself went to watch the movie.

The above mentioned sentence may sound correct to some of you, but it is not. Just remove “John” from the subject , you are left with-

“myself went to watch the movie.”- We are sure none of you would find this correct.

The correct sentence is, “I went to watch the movie.” Similarly,  “John and I went to watch the movie,” is the correct sentence.

Myself vs me

You were supposed to contact John, Ricky and myself.

The above mentioned sentence may sound correct to some of you, but it is not. Just remove “John, Ricky” from the subject , you are left with-

“You were supposed to contact myself.” – We are sure none of you would find this correct.

The correct statement is, “you were supposed to contact me.” Similarly, “you were supposed to contact John, Ricky and me,” is the correct statement.
